QMax Unveils Singapore's First Wireless Broadband Base Station at Bukit Timah
This marks the beginning of the long awaited, low cost, dedicated service which would soon be available to all homes and businesses in Singapore.
SINGAPORE - January 24, 2006 - QMax Communications Pte Ltd, a wireless broadband Internet service provider, today announced the launch of Singapore's first commercially-ready pre-mobile wireless broadband (commonly known as pre-mobile WiMAX) base station at the Bukit Timah area. This event marks a key milestone in Singapore's telecommunications history as it signifies the beginning of the long awaited, low cost and dedicated wireless broadband service for all homes and businesses in Singapore.
QMax is a joint venture between QALA Singapore, a leading-edge, next-generation carrier delivering business data, network management, security, application management and professional services to enterprises and global carriers, and Creative Technology Ltd, a worldwide leader in digital entertainment products for PC users.
Based on the 2.3ghz spectrum, QMax was awarded 6 lots of the wireless broadband access spectrum. It also has the most number of lots in Singapore enabling QMax to offer island-wide services.
The Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore had stipulated a 36 months deployment deadline for successful bidders of the wireless broadband spectrum held in May 2005. In a demonstration of its commitment to delivering affordable wireless broadband to the masses, QMax has successfully achieved the deployment of its first base station in less than 8 months.
Benefits of using the pre-mobile WiMAX goes far beyond costs saving. This technology allows very easy plug-and-play features as well as portable and quick deployment in both indoor and outdoor areas. End users can also use QMax wireless broadband as an extension of WiFi to their home or office environment.
"We are really thrilled to make Singapore Internet history today. It has always been an agenda for us, as an ISP, to offer dedicated wireless Internet access service where customers will be able to enjoy high quality and consistent performance at affordable prices," said Mr Alex Tan, Director of QMax Communications.
"Creative is very excited to be part of this new wireless platform as wireless broadband connectivity will be a key driver for the future growth of our portable digital entertainment devices like the award-winning Creative Zen Vision:M. WiMAX will enable users to stream or download high quality audio or video contents as and where they like. WiMAX could become an extremely exciting new beginning for many compelling digital entertainment products in the near future," said Mr Sim Wong Hoo, Chairman and CEO of Creative Technology Ltd.
"We are pleased that QMax is starting their deployment to roll out their wireless broadband service. This brings us a step closer to our vision of ubiquitous connectivity anytime, anywhere. Consumers and companies stand to benefit from the availability of a wider choice of broadband services that complements their lifestyle and business needs," said Mr Khoong Hock Yun, Assistant Chief Executive, Infrastructure and Manpower Development, IDA Singapore.
"This is a milestone for Singapore and we are delighted to be providing the world's most popular portable broadband wireless network to the mass market here," said Roger Dorf, President and CEO of Navini Networks. "Navini and QMax share the vision of delivering personal broadband to the people of Singapore with a seamless upgrade to mobile WiMAX 802.16e."
